REGGIO CALABRIA
The heart of Calabria is certainly Reggio Calabria. To start a tour of this magical territory, Reggio Calabria is definitely the best starting point. Called the City of Bronzes, because here are built the famous Riace bronzes, Reggio Calabria is a city rich in history and places to visit. In particular the Cathedral, of Norman times, and many other minor churches, but certainly not for beauty. In Reggio Calabria the baroque style can be felt in the air and this is a real pleasure for the eyes.
Certainly worth seeing is the promenade of Reggio, known as the most beautiful km in Italy, a name given, not surprisingly, by the poet Gabriele D'annunzio. From here you can admire the Strait of Messina, Mount Etna and the Peloritani Mountains.
Also the Aragonese Castle is a place full of charm, absolutely to visit. Today the castle is the seat of the Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics, where many cultural and artistic conferences are held.
Not to be missed is a visit to the "National Museum of Magna Graecia" where archaeological finds found in the Calabrian land are kept: Paleolithic graffiti, votive tablets, a marble work dedicated to the God Apollo and other bronze works, including the inevitable Riace Bronzes, discovered in 1972.
PIZZO
Pizzo is a real pearl of the Coast of the Gods. It dates back to medieval times and is absolutely a place to visit. Narrow and small streets tell a story of fishermen and glorious past times. The castle of Joachim Murat, dating back to the 15th century, is a venue for events and cultural tours not to be missed. The Church of Piedigrotta is also a place not to be missed: dug into the rock, it contains the tuff effigies that tell the life of Jesus and the Saints.
In Pizzo you cannot miss the famous "Tartufo" of Pizzo, which is nothing more than a ball of ice cream, similar to an arancino, with a heart of melted chocolate and a crunchy exterior of cocoa, to be enjoyed in Piazza della Repubblica.
TROPEA
And what about our Tropea? The town is a real gem of the Tyrrhenian Sea, a wonder for those lucky enough to visit it. Its rocky profile is unmistakable: it offers absolutely unique views. And it could not be otherwise, since legend has it that it was the great hero Hercules who founded it, during his return trip from the Pillars of Hercules. The buildings in the old town centre, overlooking the beach below, are definitely worth seeing.
A visit should be made to the Cathedral of Maria Santissima of Romania, a Romanesque style building, inside which the image of the Madonna of Romania is preserved. In summer there are many events that are organized, such as the festival of the famous Red Onion of Tropea. On the occasion of the festival it will be possible to taste traditional dishes prepared with the good red onion, protected by the "IGP" trademark.
Easily reachable are also the beautiful towns of Stilo, Gerace, Zungri with its caves and Serra with the Sanctuary and many others like Zambrone with the Paradise of the diver, Parghelia with the Pizzuta and many others.
A complete tour is possible, if you are a sportsman, also on board of a mountain bike with assisted pedaling, or on foot. We will tell you all the best and exciting routes to enjoy a full and exciting tour, whatever means of transport you choose!
